Oscar Romero was a Bishop of the Catholic Church in El Salvador who later served as the fourth Archbishop of San Salvador. He was born on 15th August 1917 in Ciudad Barrios, El Salvador. When he turned one, he was baptised into the Catholic Church by Fr. Cecilio Morales. He lived with his Father, Mother, 5 brothers and his 2 sisters. Oscar’s passion was to fight for the poor and oppressed. He had a friend named Rutilio Grande. Rutilio Grande died protesting against injustice. Oscar Romero’s passion changed because of the death of Rutilio Grande. Oscar decided to protest too.

Oscar Romero spoke out against poverty, social justice and torture. He helped the poor by saying speeches, organising peace marches, praying and blessing them. While he was helping the poor, he was also annoying the Government because they did not like it when people spread news and information about protesting against poverty and injustice and the Government wanted power. The news was being spread by radio and church.

On March 24th 1980, Oscar Romero was saying mass in a chapel. When he was saying it, he was brutally murdered with a gun by the Government. Oscar was announced a martyr by Pope Francis on 3rd February 2015. After the death of Oscar Romero, more violence happened. 40 people were killed and many injured at his funeral. Oscar Romero was buried in the Metropolitan Cathedral of San Salvador. One of Oscar’s quotes is
“There are many things that can only be seen through eyes that have cried.”
